No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A statewide industrial strike called by a joint forum of 21 central trade unions in West Bengal on Thursday evoked a partial response, with banking services and some industrial zones affected while public transport remained largely normal. The strike was part of a nationwide protest demanding repeal of the Central Labour Code Act and opposing what unions termed anti-worker and pro-corporate policies.
Banking operations in several public and private sector banks were disrupted, trade union leaders claimed, though the State Bank of India reported normal functioning across its branches. The Bank Employees Federation of India said services in most banks were hit, while SBI employees did not directly participate but extended moral support. Authorities at Kolkata Port said cargo handling and loading activities continued without disruption.
Industrial hubs in Durgapur and Haldia witnessed demonstrations by members of CITU, AITUC and UTUC, who also raised the slogan of ‘save Bengal’ in the poll-bound state. The jute sector reported partial disruption, with several mills either shut or functioning partially. Jute mill areas appeared largely deserted, and rallies were held outside units such as the Ganges Jute Mill in Bansberia, urging workers to support the strike.
Protesters took out rallies and set up barricades in parts of Barrackpore, leading to slight disruptions in normal public life. However, public transportation was kept outside the strike’s ambit due to ongoing state school board examinations. The administration increased surveillance across sensitive areas, and no untoward incidents were reported.
